Date and time: November 19, 2016 (Sat.) 15:15 – 17:15

Speaker 2: Norio Komine (Yonaguni Municipal Government)
Speaker 3: Naoki Amano (Yamagata University)
The main purpose of the meeting is to analyze new trends of the Northeast Asian region from a border studies perspective. Northeast Asia can be considered as a crossroads between inland Asia and marine Asia; on the one hand, there is an inland theater stretching from Russia to Mongolia and Southeast Asia and, on the other hand, there is a marine theater stretching from Russia toward the Korean Peninsula, Taiwan, and Japan. Neither shall we not forget the influence of the USA as the superpower in the region. At this meeting, we will look at the marine part from the Sea of Okhotsk to the Sea of Japan and the East China Sea, analyzing relations between Japan and neighboring countries. This meeting is a part of the NIHU Area Studies Project for Northeast Asia, positioned as a process for obtaining fruitful research results through collaboration with academic stakeholders.
